Tips for a good acknowledgement

Name your supervisor properly. Title, initials and surname, spelt exactly as on departmental documents.
Keep it to one page. Thank a few people by name and group everyone else.
Stay formal. Avoid slang, nicknames and inside jokes; examiners read this page too.
Write it last. By the end you will know everyone who helped, including anyone who assisted with data collection.

What is the difference between a dedication and an acknowledgement?

A dedication is one or two lines offering the work to someone special, such as God, your parents or someone who has passed on. An acknowledgement is a short page thanking the people who helped you complete the project: your supervisor, lecturers, family, friends and sponsors.

How long should a project acknowledgement be?

Usually 150 to 300 words, and never more than one page. Thank the most important people by name and group the rest (for example, 'all the lecturers of the department').

In what order should I thank people?

The usual order in Nigerian projects is God (if you wish), your supervisor, the Head of Department and lecturers, your parents or guardians, siblings, then friends, coursemates and sponsors, ending with a general thank-you.

Should I include titles like Dr. and Prof.?

Yes. Write names as your department does on official documents, with the title and initials, for example Dr. A. B. Adeyemi or Prof. C. O. Nwosu. Check the spelling of your supervisor's name carefully.

Is it 'acknowledgement' or 'acknowledgment'?

Both are correct. 'Acknowledgement' is the British spelling used in most Nigerian universities and polytechnics, and the page is often headed ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS.

Can I write my acknowledgement without mentioning God?

Yes. It is common in Nigeria to thank God first, but it is not required. Choose 'No, start with people' and the acknowledgement opens with a general thank-you instead.
